turned and walked out of the tent.
Everybody watched him go.
Max laughed again, but it was a smaller laugh this time. A little uncertain. He looked at me.
“Where’s he going? Is he leaving you already?”
I didn’t answer. I didn’t know.
Claire tugged on his arm. “Max, come on. Let’s go say hi to my aunt.”
“No, no. I want to see this.” He took another drink. “I want to see what Hannah’s rent-a-boyfriend brought me.”
So we stood there. Me and Max and Claire. And a hundred and fifty people, half-pretending not to watch.
It was the longest five minutes of my life.
