If you grew up turning a metal key in an ignition, switching to a keyless car feels like magic. You walk up, the doors unlock, and with one push of a button, you’re off. But “magic” technology has its own set of rules. If you’ve been out of the loop, here is the essential guide to mastering your keyless vehicle.
1. The “Dead Fob” Trick
What happens if your key fob battery dies? You aren’t stranded. Almost every keyless fob has a hidden mechanical key inside it (usually released by a small switch). There is often a hidden keyhole under a plastic cap on the driver’s door handle. Once inside, holding the dead fob directly against the Start button usually allows the car to start via a backup inductive signal.
2. The Signal “Relay” Theft
Thieves can now use a device to “grab” the signal from your key fob while it’s sitting on your kitchen counter and relay it to your car in the driveway.
- The Fix: Keep your keys in a Faraday pouch or a metal tin to block the signal when you’re at home.
3. The Engine Can Stay On
Unlike a traditional key, a push-button car doesn’t require the fob to stay running. If you drop a passenger off and they have the keys in their pocket, you can drive away—but once you turn the engine off, you won’t be able to start it again. Always “check your pockets” before your passenger leaves!
