We’ve all been there: you’ve found the perfect can of soup or beans, but the can opener is nowhere to be found. Before you reach for a dangerous kitchen knife or a hammer, there is a much safer, incredibly simple method sitting right in your silverware drawer.
All you need is a sturdy metal spoon and a little bit of friction.
The “Recipe” for Success
Prep Time: 2–3 Minutes Skill Level: Beginner Tools Needed: 1 Large Metal Spoon (Stainless steel works best)
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. The Grip
Hold the spoon by the bowl (the part you eat from) rather than the handle. You want your thumb tucked into the curve of the spoon. This gives you maximum leverage and prevents the handle from bending.
2. Find the “Sweet Spot”
Position the tip of the spoon on the inside edge of the can’s rim. Most cans have a slightly thinned groove right where the lid meets the side wall.
