Watch out for excess, though!
Too much caffeine can backfire. According to ANSES (the French agency for food, environmental, and occupational health safety), about 30% of adults and 11% of children in France consume more caffeine than the recommended dose, which can lead to:
Heart palpitations and anxiety
Anxiety and nervousness
Sleep problems
Long-term effects on your cardiovascular system and bones
Some people are more sensitive to caffeine, including pregnant women, children, and people taking heart medication or anti-anxiety drugs.
What’s the ideal daily dose of coffee?
Dr. Wen reminds us that up to 400 mg of caffeine a day, roughly four cups of filtered coffee, is a safe dose for most adults.
That’s about:
4 cups of filtered coffee,
or 3 espressos,
or 2 large American coffees.
Beyond that, your risk of side effects goes up: nervousness, irritability, and insomnia.
