“Six months ago, Meridian identified a critical vulnerability in a network architecture prototype we were developing for hospital systems.”

The room became quieter.

“Our engineering teams spent weeks trying to isolate the problem.”

Dad looked at me.

He knew.

Vanessa didn’t.

“Then one of our graduate interns identified the flaw in forty-seven minutes.”

Whispers spread through the room.

“She later designed a patch that reduced the intrusion risk by ninety-three percent.”

Vanessa’s face slowly changed.

Adrian smiled.

“That intern was Claire Bennett.”

The ballroom erupted in applause.

Dad stood immediately.

I remained seated.

Mom’s hand dropped away from Vanessa.

Adrian lifted one hand.

“But that is not the reason I came here.”

The room settled again.

Vanessa whispered,

“What does that mean?”

I finally looked at her.

“It means you should listen.”

Adrian explained that my patch had been reviewed by Meridian’s board.

It had then been integrated into a cybersecurity platform being licensed to several major hospital networks.

Then he said the sentence Vanessa would probably remember forever.

“Claire was not simply offered employment.”

He paused.

“She was offered leadership of the team responsible for commercializing the technology she helped create.”

Mom turned toward me.

“What?”

Vanessa went pale.

Adrian continued.
