“The printed document Claire received today listed only her original base salary. It did not reflect the signing bonus, performance package, equity participation, or intellectual-property compensation recently approved by the board.”

Dad stared at me.

“How much are we talking about?”

I answered quietly.

“Potentially a lot.”

Vanessa laughed.

It sounded forced.

“She’s lying.”

Unfortunately for her, Adrian heard it.

So did everyone else.

He looked toward our table.

“Ms. Bennett?”

I stood.

Vanessa suddenly grabbed my wrist.

“Don’t.”

I looked down at her hand.

She released me.

As I walked toward the stage, Adrian noticed the paper scattered across the floor.

“What happened there?”

Before I could answer, Vanessa called out,

“It was a joke!”

Everyone turned.

Mom stood quickly beside her.

“Just a family misunderstanding.”

I stopped walking.

For years, those two words had erased everything.

Vanessa insulting me?

A misunderstanding.

Vanessa taking money from my room?

A misunderstanding.

Mom asking me to turn down opportunities because Vanessa felt insecure?

Keeping the peace.

Not anymore.

I pulled the torn corner of the letter from my pocket.

“My sister destroyed the offer your company sent me.”

Adrian’s expression changed.

Vanessa stood.

“It was just paper!”

“Yes,” I said.

“It was.”

Then Adrian looked toward two Meridian executives standing beside the stage.

One stepped forward.

Vanessa recognized him before Mom did.

Marcus Lee.

Director of recruitment at Meridian Dynamics.

And two weeks earlier, Vanessa had submitted an application to his department.

She had mentioned it nearly every day.

Marcus looked down at the destroyed letter.

Then at her.

“Vanessa Bennett?”
