4. Store the “Bait”
If you have a bowl of fruit on the counter, you’re essentially running a 24/7 buffet for pests.
- The Method: During an active infestation, move all fruit—especially bananas, tomatoes, and peaches—into the refrigerator. Even a single overripe potato in the back of a cupboard can be the “ground zero” for a swarm.
5. Scrub the “Splash Zone”
Take a close look at your garbage disposal’s rubber splash guard (the black ring in your sink).
- The Method: Use an old toothbrush and some soapy water to scrub the underside of those rubber flaps. Food particles often get trapped there, creating a perfect breeding ground that a simple rinse won’t reach.
6. The Wine Bottle Trick
If you have a nearly empty bottle of red wine, don’t pour it out.
- The Method: Leave the bottle on the counter with just a tiny bit of wine left in the bottom. The narrow neck makes it easy for flies to enter but nearly impossible for them to find their way out.
7. Bleach is Not the Answer
Many people reach for bleach to kill drain gnats, but it actually passes through the pipes too quickly to be effective against the larvae.
- The Better Alternative: Use an enzyme-based drain cleaner. These “eat” the organic material that gnats feed on, effectively starving the population at the source.
